Should I Stain or Paint My Fence?

Which is Better; Paint Or Stain?

When it comes to your wood fence, you can protect it in one of two ways. You can paint it, or you can stain it. Either option will protect your fence from dangers like rot and mold, but which option is best for you? Let’s find out!

Want to Stain it?

Staining your fence is a great option especially if you have a wood like cedar that needs to breathe in order to last for a longer period of time. Staining is a little more expensive than paint, but because it soaks into the wood, when it is time to apply a new coat of stain, all you have to do is wash it off instead of chipping it. Stains also come in a variety of different colors now, so if you want a red stain, make sure you choose the solid stain option!

Applying a stain by your self can be done in four simple steps. One, check your fence for anything that will affect the look of your stain like broken parts or loose, hanging nails. If you find a repair that is too big to handle alone, Dallas Fence Builders will come by and help you out! Two, clean the fence with a good wood cleaner by applying it in even coats. Make sure that you follow all of the safety precautions and dust away all the dirt and debris with a mop or soft bristled brush. Three, apply your stain with your choice of application tool! Just make sure that no matter what you use, you apply it in an even uniform way. Four, allow your fence to rest from twenty four to forty eight hours to make sure that it lasts for a long time. This means do not hang anything on it, or touch it!

Want to Paint it?

While paint is not suggested as it does not last as long or do as good of a job at protecting your fence as staining does, you can still get it if you feel like it is something you want, or if it is something you have to get. If done right, it can last you a good amount of time.

Here are five steps for applying paint to your fence installation. One, Clean the fence from any broken bits, nails or screws. These will affect the final result of the paint job and you are going to want to fix that! Two, clean the fence with either some wood cleaner or a power washer to remove and dirt or debris. Three, place protective sheets over the areas where you do not want paint to go; such as on the grass, bushes, and the walls of your home. Four, Apply an even coat of primer with your application tool of chose. Five, once you are sure the primer is dry and that you have applied enough, apply an even coat of paint to the fence and allow to dry! If your fence requires a few extra coats, make sure that you continue to apply it in the same even fashion!
